Muhammad Sanusi II, emir of Kano, has said former first lady, Patience Jonathan, was right in calling those in the North, Almajiris
The emir said this in a message to the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group at the Chibok girls’ inaugural lecture in Abuja on Friday, where he was represented by his daughter, Shahida Sanusi.
He said: "My daughter (Shahida Sanusi) represented me at the Chibok Girls Inaugural Annual Lecture.
I stayed away from the event because my recent comments condemning Nigerian leaders have been misunderstood.
Our interest should be to bring back our girls, but there are some other deep seated issues affecting the girl child that the group should also focus on.
The fact that my critics are diverting attention from the issues I raised concerning the poverty and lack of leadership, especially in northern Nigeria.
You may say what you like about me, but it won't change the issues that are inherent in our society.
Anyone who chooses to talk for the voceiless, must be ready to face a backlash, after all the insults, the issues will remain and not go away.
Shahida's speech; "My father is not afraid of giving up his throne if it stands in the way of speaking the truth."
If you think I'm giving trouble, wait till you have to deal with my daughter.
I chose Shahida to represent me at the event because of her passion for gender issues.
When Patience Jonathan called those of us in the north almajiris, we got angry, but come to think of it, is that not what we really are? We give birth to children and just abandon them. There are no schools for the poor. There are no hospitals for the poor."
Meanwhile, the Emir has disowned all social media accounts opened in his name.
Sanusi in a statement on Friday in Kano, through his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Munir Sanusi, the Emir said he never authorised any person or organisation to open Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or any other social media accounts nor post any message on his behalf.
He said the recent development is coming after an earlier advertorial disclaiming a fake Facebook and Twitter accounts created in the name of his Highness.
“We have officially notified the administrators of the fake Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts requesting that the accounts be closed immediately in addition to detecting the identity of the culprits.
“It is important to reiterate that the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has persistently stood for the unity of the nation regardless of its diversity.
“He always emphasise the need for tolerance and respect for one another.”
