Mary J. Blige gets Star on Hollywood Walk Of Fame on her birthday (Photos)

Mary J. Blige received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the recording category, on her 47th birthday on Thursday.

The music star joins the likes of Angela Basset, Viola Davis, Taraji .P. Henson and Jennifer Hudson on the coveted Hollywood walkway.

In her speech to the crowd, the singer cum actress who was nominated in the 2018 Golden Globes in the Best Original Song (Mighty River in Mudbound) and Best Supporting Actress (Mudbound) categories, said:
I am so grateful for this star right now because I’ve earned it probably three times, and I say that with confidence and not arrogance. I know my work and I understand what this means. Dee Rees called me and gave me a job and put my life back in motion with ‘Mudbound’. Dee, I want to thank you for calling me. I don’t think you understand what you did… You really really helped save my life. ‘Mudbound’ opened up doors and gave me strength that I didn’t even know I had.

The Grammy Award-winning artist was greeted by fans singing “Happy Birthday” as she posed for pictures and hugged family members before the ceremony began. “I’m proud of us. Look at where we are,” Blige replied to one fan who applauded the singer.

Fellow music icon Sean “Diddy” Combs, who collaborated with Blige on her album “My Life,” praised the singer for her ability to heal through her music. “Whatever she is going through, she knows she has a responsibility to help others who are going through the same thing,” Diddy said. “Mary J. Blige has saved a lot of lives. Mary J. Blige has saved a lot of broken hearts.”

Diddy referred to Blige as family. “We have been through a whole lot. We started from nothing,” he said.

Andre Harrell, who founded Uptown Records, the label that signed Blige in 1989 when she was 18 years old, said: “I am feeling like a proud musical father,” “Mary receiving a star on the Walk of Fame, is like black women and little girls from around the world with a dream also receiving one.”

“I remember asking, ‘Who is this young girl singing with all this emotion and pain.’ I still remember the expression on your face when I told you your voice would sing with rock legends; that your voice would change your life and make you royal.”
