World Cup 2018: Julen Lopetegui sacked as Spain coach just hours after Real Madrid appointed him

Julen Lopetegui, has been sacked as the head coach of Spain national team just two days before Spain’s Group B opener against Portugal.

Lopetegui's sack comes barely 24hrs after Real Madrid announced he would be replacing Zinedine Zidane.

The Spanish Football Federation (SFF) president Luis Rubiales confirmed the sack in a news conference.

He explains that Lopetegui has been sacked and that the SFF only knew he was joining Madrid after the World Cup five minutes before it was announced .
"We have been forced to dispense with the national coach. We wish you the greatest of luck. The negotiation has occurred without any information to the RFEF. Just five minutes before the press release. There's a way to act that needs to be fulfilled" said Rubiales.
Yesterday, Real Madrid named Lopetegui as the next manager of the club following the departure of Zidane.

The news came just weeks after Julen committed his future to Spain's national team by signing a deal until 2020.

Initial confirmation from the Spanish FA, said the 51-year-old would depart following the 2018 World Cup.

But the federation’s president, Rubiales, is unhappy with the situation and has decided to fire Lopetegui.
