Finally, INEC issues Okorocha Certificate of Return

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally issued Certificate of Return to former Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha.

A Federal High court in Abuja last Friday had directed the commission to issue the former governor the certificate.

However, another federal high in Imo state on Tuesday directed the same INEC not to issue the certificate to Okorocha.

The commission, however, obeyed the directive of the Abuja court after its management meeting on Tuesday.

Okorocha was on Tuesday prevented from participating in the inauguration of the 9th national assembly.

The ex-governor had arrived at the national assembly in the morning and headed straight to the office of clerk of the national assembly, Sani Omolori.

After some minutes at Omolori’s office, he walked out of the national assembly.

Okorocha was said to have attempted convincing the clerk to accredit him for the exercise but he did not succeed.

He had contested the Imo west senatorial district election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared winner.

But returning officer for the election, Innocent Ibeabuchi, later said he declared the former governor winner of the election under duress.

The electoral body had refused to issue him a certificate of return, saying the election was fraught with controversies.
