Atiku describes Sowore's arrest by DSS as "kidnapping"

Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in the early hours of Saturday.

Sowore, who was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 elections,  is said to have been picked up and taken to the head office of the secret police in Shangisha, Lagos.

Sowore's driver has narrated how DSS arrested the activist, saying he was picked up in a “gestapo manner”.

The arrest and detention of Sowore is said to be connected to #RevolutionNow movement, a series of planned protests against bad governance in Nigeria scheduled for Monday.

Reacting, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, described the arrest as kidnapping.

Atiku wrote on Twitter:
"Freedom of speech is not only constitutionally guaranteed, it is the substructure of our democracy. These kidnappings in the guise of arrests stands condemned."

The arrest of Sowore has sparked an outrage on social media.
